We are big consumers of granola, i.e. crunchy muesli - we consume it every day and we eagerly try different varieties. Its only downsides are often the high price and the fact that you don't really know what you're putting in your mouth.

Ready-made granola usually contains huge amounts of sugar and low-quality fats, including trans fats. If you want to enjoy granola with a clear conscience, you should make it yourself!

With this recipe, you can make easy, good and healthy homemade granola. You don't have to follow the recipe slavishly, but you can vary the composition of the granola according to your own mood and the supplies you find in the cupboard.

Equipment needed

You can make granola with the usual tools:

  • sharp knife, Blender or small cutter for chopping nuts
  • baking sheet and baking paper
Chopped nuts

Ingredients needed

The basic ingredients of homemade granola are:

  • oatmeal - you should also try other flakes
  • nuts – e.g. nut meal, nut mixture, or any type of nut on its own
  • seeds – e.g. sunflower seeds or seed mixtures
  • dried fruits and berries - e.g. date, apricot, fig, cranberry, raisins, dried pineapple and dried papaya
  • rapeseed oil – regular, not cold pressed
  • maple syrup

Rapeseed oil and maple syrup are the ingredients that make granola crunchy and delicious, so you can't leave them out. Almost everything else can be replaced with something else.

Muesli ingredients

Is it worth adding dried fruit before or after roasting?

This is a bit of a matter of taste. I personally add all the ingredients at once and roast them in the oven, and I have had good results this way. For example, dried apricots and cranberries are so soft and juicy even when dried that they withstand roasting well.

On the other hand, dried figs may become too dry in the oven. I have noticed that such already "dry" dried fruits should be chopped into very small pieces before roasting, so that they do not become too much for the teeth. In addition to figs, dates are also like this.

Another option is to add dried fruits and berries only after roasting.

This is how you make granola

Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius (350 Fahrenheit).

Chop nuts and dried fruits into small pieces.

Pile all the ingredients on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. Add rapeseed oil and maple syrup, and mix well (for example, by just kneading by hand).

Muesli in a pan before frying

If there is a suitable amount of maple syrup, you will notice that at this point the flakes and other ingredients start to stick to each other and a wonderful muesli-like composition begins to emerge. If this does not happen at all, you should add a little syrup. Adding rapeseed oil does not have a similar effect.

Toast the granola in the middle of the oven for 7 minutes, then take the tray out of the oven. Mix the ingredients with two large spoons and then move the tray back to the oven for about 7 minutes.

If the outermost ingredients start to brown, take the tray out of the oven earlier. On the other hand, if the granola still looks too pale and doesn't seem crunchy, let it roast a little longer.

Allow the granola to cool, then transfer it to a container with a lid.
